Dave recorded his album, Mr. Sunshine, under the watchful eye of producer George Dugan up at George's studio in Washington Heights, NYC. A cast of local characters also known as George's itinerant house-band backed Dave in the studio, including drummer John Digiulio (a straight-up pro for sho sho), bassist Bill Burtt, keyboardist Scott Morley (of the Brooklyn band The Upwelling), and multi-instrumentalist J.J. Jenkins, veteran of The Big City Stompers, who contributed his psychedelic sound on the lapsteel, and who, when he isn't playing and recording his own shit, is building custom relics for Dave and many others.

The vibe was loose and, at times, unbearably sweaty. The majority of the work was done over the deathly humid summer of 2004, and the steamy streets of the Heights and their unrelenting cacophony seemed to seep into the reels. Cats would come in damp and leave looking like they just showered with their clothes on. The Malacon on 175th and Broadway was HQ for the whole operation. Full chicken and two sides for eight bucks. All props to the Malacon.

Doug Henderson did the mastering out of his place in Williamsburg, did a great job, and when the thing was finished, nobody could figure out what the hell it was exactly. White-soul-folk-country-rock... something. In the midst of the blizzard in January, when Doug came through with the final masters, it all still sounded like an August Sunday in the Heights.
